SECURITY UPDATE – .NET Messenger Service clients for Windows CE .NET
- no.1569
- 2003-08-27
Microsoft is making available to its
OEMs an update/QFE for all Microsoft .NET Messenger Service clients to
provide improved security, privacy protection, and reliability. All
OEMs using the Windows CE .NET 4.0, 4.1, and 4.2 implementation of the
Messenger Service client should obtain the update/QFE when it is
available, and provide it to their customers (end-users). The
update/QFE will be available for OEM download at the end of September,
2003.
IMPORTANT: Effective OCTOBER 16, 2003, end-users who do not have the
QFE/updated version of the .NET Messenger will no longer be able to
access the .NET Messenger Service.
Details
- From now until August 28, 2003, there will no change to the end-user
experience.
- Starting August 28, 2003, when an end-user launches .NET Windows
Messenger on an Embedded Device, the following Instant Messenger message
will be available in English: "You are running a version of Messenger
that requires an immediate security update. Please visit
http://messenger.msn.com/Help/Upgrades.aspx to complete the update."
- The end-user accessing the above site will find instructions
referring them back to their OEM for the update/QFE.
Response Plan
- The update/QFE will be available to OEMs for download on the
Microsoft OEM Embedded Systems Website at the end of September.
- If you are not currently registered for the Microsoft OEM Embedded
Systems Website, you may sign up today at
https://microsoft.embeddedoem.com.
- As an OEM, you should develop a plan for providing this update/QFE to
your end user. You should communicate to your end users that the .NET
Messenger Service will no longer function on the Embedded System
effective October 16, 2003 without the update/QFE.
- At the end of September, a second notice informing you of the
availability of the update/QFE download will be sent.
- If you, as the OEM, choose not to use the download on the Microsoft
OEM Embedded Systems Website, you can order a CD containing the Windows
CE .NET 4.0, 4.1, and 4.2 update/QFE from ARs in early October.
